Container Plants for Sunny Terraces my favourites and how to care for them

A sunny terrace is a gift – for us and for the right plants. It took me a few years to understand which plants truly love these conditions and which ones merely pretend. Geraniums and lavender are obvious choices. But oleander, agapanthus, herbs and even small olive trees transform a sunny terrace into something extraordinary. Here are my absolute favourites – with honest care tips from real experience.

Container Plants for Sunny Terraces

Which container plants really tolerate full sun the distinction that changes everything

Full sun means more than 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plants that truly thrive in this category: lavender, geraniums (pelargoniums), oleander, agapanthus, lantana, portulaca, verbena and all Mediterranean herbs. They all originate from regions with exactly these conditions and produce the most blooms under full sun.

What suffers on a sunny terrace: hydrangeas (they want partial shade), fuchsias (dislike midday sun), impatiens (get scorched). Putting these plants on the sunny side and then wondering why they die is a classic mistake.

1 · Lavender the absolute classic

Lavender on a sunny terrace is almost too easy – it needs little water, likes poor soil and blooms gratefully in full sun. In a terracotta pot it also looks beautiful. I have written everything important about care in my detailed article about growing lavender in a pot.

2 · Geraniums (Pelargoniums) sun-hungry and bloom-happy

Geraniums are the most industrious bloomers I know. They flower from May to October almost without interruption when you fertilise regularly and remove spent flower heads. In full sun they bloom best.

3 · Oleander the Mediterranean star

Oleander is the most dramatic terrace plant there is – and it loves full sun more than almost any other plant. Important: oleander is poisonous – all parts of the plant, including the water in the saucer. Please plan accordingly with children and pets.

4 · Mediterranean herbs beautiful and useful

Rosemary, thyme, sage and oregano are not just kitchen herbs – they are true ornamental plants. They all love full sun, need almost no water and are completely carefree. Half a metre of terrace space and four herb pots give you a kitchen garden right next to the grill.

5 · My arrangement for a sunny terrace how I combine the pots

My favourite combination for a fully sunny terrace in country style: an olive tree or oleander as a large anchor point (40+ litre pot). Beside it two medium terracotta pots with lavender. In front smaller pots with geraniums in rose and white. On the table a herb set of three small pots.

Frequently Asked Questions quick and clear answers

Which container plants tolerate sun and heat best?

Lavender, geraniums, oleander, agapanthus, lantana, all Mediterranean herbs and olive trees. These plants come from the Mediterranean and love warmth and direct sun.

How often do I need to water container plants on a sunny terrace?

More often than in a bed because the soil in a pot dries out faster. Rule of thumb: whenever the top 2-3 cm of soil are dry. In summer this can be daily.
