Hygge in Autumn the art of making yourself truly comfortable
Every year, when the first cool morning arrives – the kind of morning where you know on waking that something is different outside, that the air smells of autumn and damp leaves – I think: now. Now the most beautiful time in the house begins. Hygge, that Danish word for something that does not translate perfectly into English (cosiness? wellbeing? the-feeling-when-everything-is-right?), is for me the real season of autumn.

What hygge really means and why it is more than candles and blankets
Hygge comes from Danish and Norwegian and means roughly: the deliberate creation of warmth, shelter and wellbeing – through surroundings, through people, through simple pleasures. It is not a decorating style and not a trend. It is an attitude.
The misunderstanding: you cannot buy hygge. Hygge is not the purchase of the right wool jumper or the right candle brand. Hygge is the lighting of the candle. The putting on of the jumper. Taking time for the moment.
1 · Light, textiles and rituals the three pillars of autumn hygge
All ceiling spotlights off by 5 pm. Instead: candles, floor lamps with warm light, fairy lights on the windowsill. My autumn ritual: as soon as it is 4 o'clock, I walk through the flat and light all the candles.
Swap cushion covers for autumn colours: terracotta, rust brown, mustard yellow. Wool blankets on every sofa. A warmer rug under the coffee table.
Hygge rituals I treasure in autumn: Sunday flea market and coffee somewhere afterwards. The first hot chocolate of the season. An evening cooking new recipes with no pressure.
2 · Hygge food in autumn warm, simple, good
Hygge is also what is on the table. In autumn: soup from the large pot that has been simmering half the afternoon. Home-baked bread. A simple cake – apple cake, plum cake. Not complicated, not elaborate. But the house smells of it all day.
Frequently Asked Questions quick and clear answers
What does hygge mean?
Hygge comes from Danish and means the deliberate creation of warmth, shelter and wellbeing – through surroundings, through people and through simple everyday pleasures. It is an attitude, not an interior style.
How do you create hygge at home in autumn?
Light candles, bring out wool blankets, warm light from multiple sources, scented autumn candles (cinnamon, fig, sandalwood). And: take time, be slow, cultivate rituals.
Can you practice hygge alone?
Yes – hygge with others is lovely, but it works solo too. A good book, a cup of tea, a candle, rain at the window. Consciously enjoying simple moments is the core of hygge.
