Caring for Geraniums so they bloom all summer long
Geraniums – I know, I know, they are considered the quintessential grandmother's plant. I say: unjustly. Because there is hardly a plant that is as uncomplicated, as free-flowering and as versatile. In terracotta pots on my terrace they look simply wonderful. And if you know a few ground rules, they bloom from May to October without interruption.

What geraniums need sun, water and the right pruning
Geraniums (botanically: pelargoniums) are South Africans. They love warmth and sun, tolerate drought better than waterlogging and bloom all the more prolifically the more you remove spent flower heads. These three things are the core of geranium care.
1 · Watering and feeding the most important care points
Water regularly but never leave standing in water. In pots: whenever the top layer of soil is dry, water thoroughly. Empty saucers after watering. Always water at the base directly onto the soil.
Geraniums are prolific bloomers and need nutrients accordingly. Every fortnight liquid geranium or balcony plant fertiliser in the watering can from May to August.
2 · Deadheading and overwintering the secret of continuous blooming
Regularly remove spent flower heads and the seed stems beneath them – not just the dried petals but the entire stalk down to the next leaf. This signals to the plant: keep going, produce new flowers.
Geraniums can be overwintered: cut back to approx. 10 cm in October, remove dry leaves, overwinter in a cool (8-12°C), bright, frost-free room. Water very sparingly.
Frequently Asked Questions quick and clear answers
How do I care for geraniums correctly?
Full sun, regular watering without waterlogging, feed every fortnight and regularly remove spent flowers with their whole stalks. That is all geraniums need for continuous blooming.
Why are my geraniums no longer flowering?
Most common causes: spent flowers were not removed (the plant produces seeds instead of new flowers), insufficient feeding, too little sun, or too much water. Remove spent flowers immediately and start feeding.
Can geraniums overwinter?
Yes. Cut back to 10 cm in October, place in a cool (8-12°C), bright, frost-free room, barely water, do not feed. Start a warmer position and more watering from March.
